I can’t remember first time I was in front of an Antoni Tàpies artwork, but I know it was a long, long time ago and I was very young.
I feel a deep devotion by spanish artist Antoni Tàpies and although many times I’m not able to explain in my own words the meaning of his artwork, something absolutely magical comes to me making me feel a little bit more convinced I’m a full lover of his work.
Antoni Tapies work is associated with both Tachisme and Abstract Expressionism although artist explained many times influences of Miró and zen art. The oriental signs symbology is one of the main features of his artwork. Crosses, numbers, signs and words come together to create an alphabet where he feels very comfortable.
He’s a master combining matters and few artists in the worls was able to combine different techniques and matters at same time like him.
Tapies has been the most well known catalan artist around the world being absolutely convinced of his own way of expression. Although common life objects and death is present in his work he declared an absolute admiration by Thich Nhat Hanh, the zen master retired in Plum Village and his books and texts was always in his mind giving a huge flesh air of peace and love to his artworks.
I’ve been investing a lot of my time trying to understand the language and way of expression of Antoni Tapies. After reading many books about his artworks and study carefully many of his works and language I feel an absolute devotion in his combination of signs, words and numbers, forms and colors.
I feel very comfortable expressing my feelings in a language close to Tapies way of expression. It’s something really difficult to understand if you’re not able to feel the music of this combinations close to the Egyptian pictographic scripts.
Three years ago I decided to create a collection of paintings and drawings inspired in Antoni Tàpies, called “I love AT”.
Antoni Tàpies passed away in February 2012. The world will miss his understanding and phylosophy way of thinking.
